A user during a hacking forum has published the phone numbers and private data of many many Facebook users for free of charge online, Business Insider reported Saturday. The exposed data includes personal information of over 533 million Facebook users from 106 countries, including over 32 million records on users within the US, 11 million on users within the UK, and 6 million on users in India. It includes their phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, birth dates, bios, and in some cases email addresses.
Insider reviewed a sample of the leaked data and verified several records by matching known Facebook users’ phone numbers with the IDs listed within the data set. The news website also verified records by testing email addresses from the info set in Facebook’s password reset feature, which may be wont to partially reveal a user’s telephone number .
Reuters wasn’t immediately ready to vet the knowledge , which is being offered for a couple of euros’ worth of digital credit on a well known site for low-level hackers, but Alon Gal, CTO of cybercrime intelligence firm Hudson Rock, said he had verified the authenticity of a minimum of a number of the info by comparing it against phone numbers of individuals he knew.
Facebook FB, -0.71% didn’t immediately answer multiple requests for comment by Business Insider or Axios or Reuters.
Gal first discovered the leaked data in January when a user within the same hacking forum advertised an automatic bot that would provide phone numbers for many many Facebook users in exchange for a price. Motherboard reported thereon bot’s existence at the time and verified that the info was legitimate.
Now, the whole dataset has been posted on the hacking forum for free of charge , making it widely available to anyone with rudimentary data skills. It’s not the primary time that an enormous number of Facebook users’ phone numbers are found exposed online. A vulnerability that was uncovered in 2019 allowed many phone numbers to be scraped from Facebook servers in violation of its terms of service, TechCrunch reported. Facebook said that vulnerability was patched in August 2019.
